YOSSI Benayoun has revealed his frustrations at being a bit-part player at high flying Liverpool.

The Israeli international admits he is finding it difficult to accept his role as a squad player and even hinted he could seek a move away from Anfield in January.

Benayoun was the subject of interest from several European clubs during the summer, but no move transpired and he vowed to fight for his place in Rafa Benitez’s side.

But in an interview with an Israeli TV station, the 28-year-old has laid bare his frustrations at being unable to win a starting role.

“If the situation remains the same over the next few months, and I’m not getting more time in the middle, I will not want to continue as a Liverpool player,” he said.

“The fact that I have spent so much time on the bench, while there has been a winning formula on the pitch, tells you everything. I hope it changes for me, because I want to stay, but it won’t be easy.

“I know I’m at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and that there are many good players like Ryan Babel and Jermaine Pennant who sometimes aren’t even in the squad, but it’s not much fun sitting on the bench.

“I always wanted to prove myself good enough for Liverpool, and I thought I did well last season.

“But there seems to be more competition. If I continue on the sidelines, I would not want to stay.“

Benayoun’s comments are unlikely to impress his manager who places great store in the value of players who will fight for their places. Spartak Moscow, Manchester City and Ajax are queueing up to offer him.

Rafael Benitez today hailed the efforts of his backroom staff after the Reds boss was presented with the Barclays Manager of the Month award for October.

"I am really pleased to be named manager of the month but the award is not just for me, it is good for the club and also my staff," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I think that all managers need to have good backroom staff.

"Everyone is doing a very good job and that is important. It allows me to concentrate on different things because I know that they will do the job properly."

Liverpool set to go to war with Spurs for £15m full back Bale

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will reopen old Tottenham wounds with a £15million January swoop for Spurs full back Gareth Bale.

The Wales defender, who has been on brilliant form this season, is seen by the Anfield hierarchy as a better alternative to Fabio Aurelio.

Robbie Keane bagged a brace as Liverpool returned to the top of the Barclays Premier League courtesy of a 3-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.

The Irish striker opened up his league scoring account for the Reds with two well-taken first-half goals before making way for the returning Fernando Torres on 73 minutes.

Alvaro Arbeloa rounded off the win with a well-taken strike in the dying seconds.

Steven Gerrard crashed home a last-gasp penalty as Liverpool edged closer to the Champions League knockout stages with a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid.

The Reds skipper kept his composure from the spot to send Leo Franco the wrong way and earn a richly deserved point after Maxi Rodriguez's first-half effort had threatened to give the visitors a shock triumph.

It means a win over Marseille in Matchday Five will book Rafael Benitez's side's place in the last 16 after the French outfit defeated PSV Eindhoven.

Rafael Benitez admitted he could not hide his disappointment after watching Liverpool slump to their first defeat of the season at Spurs.

The Reds had looked on course to retain their place at the top of the Barclays Premier League when Dirk Kuyt fired them in front after just three minutes.

However, the visitors could not add to their lead despite dominating the remainder of the match, and after late goals from Jamie Carragher (og) and substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko gave Spurs a a 2-1 win, the Reds boss conceded they were finding the loss difficult to take.

RAFA BENITEZ is weighing up whether or not to recall Fernando Torres to his squad for Liverpool's trip to White Hart Lane.

Reports had suggested the Spanish striker would be fit enough to make his return against Spurs but Benitez is considering leaving Torres at Melwood to continue his recuperation from injury.

The 24-year-old has missed Liverpool's last four games with a hamstring strain picked up on international duty with Spain, and although he has now returned to training, the Reds boss is adamant he will not plunge his top scorer into action before he is totally ready.

In Torres' absence, Liverpool have won three and drawn one of those four games, even managing to inflict defeat on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and Rafa Benitez believes this proves he has a squad at his disposal which can cope with the loss of even its biggest names.

Liverpool have extended their unbeaten run to 17 games after Steven Gerrard's 75th-minute penalty helped overcome Portsmouth 1-0 at Anfield.

The result keeps Rafa Benitez's men three points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League with 26 points from a possible 30.

The Reds dominated the play for much of the match, but failed to put that killer touch on to a series of well-worked moves.

Dirk Kuyt was a threat throughout and Steven Gerrard always looked liable to unlock the Pompey rearguard, and it might have been a much more flattering scoreline had one of their earlier efforts gone in during the first half.

Steven Gerrard made no mistake from the resulting penalty kick to ensure Liverpool stayed at the top of the table.

The Reds boss was disappointed to see his side concede an equaliser seven minutes from time after Robbie Keane had given them a first-half lead and believes they did not get the reward that their performance deserved.

"We had control of the game in the first half and part of the second," he told reporters at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

"I'm disappointed because we had chances to kill the game. It's a problem when you have a situation on 83 minutes and you make a mistake. You pay for it.

"For me we had plenty of situations in and around the box and should have made more of them. The entrance of Aguero gave more depth to their play and we defended worse.

"If you'd said to me before game that we'd have seven points at the end of it then it would be good. But after leading until the 83rd minute, and when you consider the chances we had, then I think we have lost two points."
