Simao netted a late equaliser as Atletico Madrid held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in their Champions League Group D clash at the Vicente Calderon.

Rafael Benitez's side, handed a 14th-minute lead by Robbie Keane's tidy finish, had looked good value to claim all three points despite riding their luck at times in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.

But Simao - a former Liverpool transfer target - netted a superb 83rd-minute equaliser to ease the pressure on Atletico coach Javier Aguirre and keep the sides locked on seven points apiece at the top of the group.

Liverpool, lining up in a 4-5-1 formation, made a bright start though it was Atletico who created the first meaningful opening when Ignacio Camacho's header dropped onto the roof of Jose Reina's net.

And they were made to pay for not taking that chance when Steven Gerrard's sublime throughball picked out the run of Keane and the Reds marksman took the ball in his stride before slotting under Leo Franco to hand Liverpool a 14th-minute lead.

Keane then missed a glorious chance to bag his second when he completely missed the ball eight yards out after Gerrard had flashed it across the face of goal.
